Ukraine and Geographical Indications: the start of an ambitious technical assistance program

The Franco-German consortium bringing together the firm DMI Associates (Fr), G.F.A. (All) and Adecia was awarded the « Support to the development of a geographical indications system » market in Ukraine. This technical assistance would help supporting the Ukrainian authorities to accompany the implementation of a regulatory framework on geographical indications and support existing or potential producer groups in drawing up specifications and a strategy specific to their products. A component focusing on rural development through the development of high-quality products is also expected under this ambitious program, which is to start in the coming weeks and is to last for three years. Adecia had already begun work to enhance local productions in the Ukrainian region of Lviv and perceived the potential of quality signs in Ukraine (Link to Adecia ad hoc article). The stakes are high for this country which is currently in transition and must find solutions for the various products of Ukrainian manufacture still called “Cognac” or “Champagne”. The free trade agreement between the EU and Ukraine implies alignment with Community rules and the elimination of all usurpations of geographical indications. A real challenge on the scale of Ukrainian producers, distributors, and institutions that Adecia and all its network of experts will be accompanying.
